I'm eager to give this book 5 stars! Not since Katherine Dunn and her legendary GEEK LOVE have I read a female author that creates such a tour de force of testosterone, ribaldry, and twisted thoughts. Believable, this story is a dark ride. Such a labor of love is put into each word, this novella reads like poetry. She has created her own language, characters, weaving storyline. I'm devouring this carnival fiasco...

Noir reading. Damn fine too so far. Depression era realism with dark humor. Recommend.

While it would be impossible to hold up to the last book I read, this is a strong read. The plot is creative and outrageous. The writing fluctuates between very strong and mediocre and predictable. I can overlook the small flaws because of the story itself. I always enjoy books that are hard to put down. I'm lucky to have two in a row.

Powerful, entertaining, sharp read. Acid humor splashed across vivid imagery. Best book I read in 2012 AND a long time!

Fantastic grimy ride. Acerbic visuals from a world in which everything that is touched is dirty and oily between the fingers. Just washing your hands isn't good enough, you need a shower. Scott's stories are painted so real, it's as if he lived each one himself, not just from his imagination. One of my favs so far.
