😣 I hate when books leave every chapter on a cliffhanger. It’s so effective at getting you to keep reading but it also makes me feel cheap. I know what you’re doing and I’m falling for it!!

This book was putting me asleep in the first half but now it's got me crying about this man losing his daughter because she is too good of a pianist

ohhh he was allowed to live cause they thought he wrote a famous revolutionary poem. that's actually sort of funny and fits his character

I like the writing of this book but you really have to suspend your disbelief with the Count being told he's allowed to stay in a hotel. In reality he would have been shot dead on site or sent to a gulag in siberia.

If I had a nickel for every time the plot was god dipped and metatron has been the one in control I’d now have three nickels!!!! I will say this is book was written before the other two I’m thinking of but still. I’m getting really tired of it. Why did this turn into Supernatural

Wait angels and God are real in this book!! Wow this got a lot more interesting. What if there was an oppressive religions governemnt that stunted the progress of science but their belief of God was also true

lol I forgot they do the classic get stuck in a coffin together trope in this book. It’s cliche but I love it

Omg this is so funny. You can totally tell the movie never adapted the rest of the book because it gets SUPER anti religion. You learn that the Vatican thought that the dust that is also referenced in the bible is the original sin from genisis and they compare the horrible child mutilation that is done by cutting away the kids daemons to circumcision!! Also Lyra straight up says the bible is just made up stories.

lol the movie straight up just ended and never finished the last three chapters of this book. It did feel like that when I was a kid too. Like it just stopped

Omg they can christen the bears in this world. I need to know what Jesus's daemon was.

I remember the movie of this did not do well but so far it is extremely faithful to the book. The pacing is so fast though. Not sure if that is just cause it's a kids book or if it should be a negative. I just want to sit with the characters for a second but no they're zipping all over. Keeps things interesting for sure

Interesting kids book. Sort of reminds me more of how the hobbit is a kids book. The politics and overbearing religion of the world is a lot deeper than you'd expect for a kids book. Also the scene of the kids getting drunk wasn't expecting

Is she falling in love with the guy she also thinks murdered her husband?? what??? and it's not even in a crazy way. this book is pretty boring

I made a joke on another review that if American psycho was written today it would be about a serial killer influencer…..not saying this book is that but this ending is reminding me of the ending of that movie a bit

Why is so little of this book about being in the past. Middle is definitely starting to drag

They keep talking about buying a home now that they’re in California. Even though they’re so poor they can barely afford to eat. I can’t tell if this is just their naive optimism persisting or if that was a normal thing to expect to be able to do back then. I think they’re still in denial about there being no steady work

Been sad watching them slowly make their way to California knowing they’re going to have a worse life when they get there

christ this is repetative. i sort of don't care about the battles cause i know this book is a series so of course he makes it to the next level and beats these lower level bosses. occasionally they'll talk about the aliens who run this game. that's probably the most interesting parts

Slow place but I do enjoy steinbecks style of writing. You have to pay attention. It’s not very straightforward. Some parts are very beautifully written

Idk what to call this style of writing where a character is written really modern and overly quirky but I hate it and I think it’s really going to date these books. Anyway Olivia is awful and I hate whenever the story goes to her. Just shut up why do you talk like that
