this book is just such a great read. i can just pick it up and re-read it anywhere. its clear about being from a white middle class woman’s point of view and no, it’s insights couldn’t be mistaken for any materialist or radical feminism (although some of her analysis is quite powerful and i think about it literally all the time), but i would recommend this to anybody. especially to feminists my age

the second chapter relies more on court records and other legal documents than slave narratives and testimony, for obvious reasons. the historical evidence presented is prolific, but i did find jones-rogers analysis incomplete at many points. she often brings up other historians' analysis, but does not necessarily entirely rebut them, other times her analysis is more of an assumption. very illuminating nonetheless

i’m going to be honest, chapter 4 sucks badly. there is valuable historical information, but davis’ analysis is shoddy. she contradicts her own earlier points and the actual historical record, and is overly concerned with rewriting history to outright DENY the male supremacy and sexism central to manhood suffrage. she tries to rewrite black male supremacy out of existence, and marginalizes black women completely
