It’s not far, 15 minutes, but you always kind of feel it when you’re leaving Cupertino, a bubble piercing. p 13

My parents—I’ll just put this out there—are like one Great Depression away from being full-on hoarders...They’ve always been too Asian to throw away things...” p 17

“I think art should probe the things you’re afraid of and the things you can’t let go of, but maybe that’s just because deep down I want to believe you can conquer them, which might not actually be true.”

“Just after midnight it starts to rain, but no one runs for the tents. Some men take off their hats. Water runs down their faces, the perfect cover for tears. East Texas clay mixes with plaster dust from the school; red sludge sucks at the soles of work boots.” p. 2

"You take in things you don't want all the time...Hold up, did you just hear, did you just say, did you just see, did you just do that? Then the voice in your head silently tells you to take your foot off your throat because just getting along shouldn't be an ambition."
God this book is powerful...

Just read an article that CPS tried to ban this book because it was being taught in 7th grade and contained depictions of torture. Some Lane Tech students contacted the author through her publicist and informed her. Kudos to those high school students for being activists! http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/lo...

I love that I was able to hear Dr. Ladson-Billings speak to our school district. She was such a compelling and entertaining speaker. Now, as I read this book, I can hear her voice in my head!
