Overwhelmingly, it's employed against anyone who tries to make use of the freedoms on which the West so prides itself: the freedom to speak and to criticize, to hold power accountable. In this way, it shares a deep bond with the approach to free expression that can be found in most dictatorships and authoritarian regimes, the places so many immigrants fled: You are free to say so long as what you say is acceptable.

It's a fascinating directive, "Go back to where you came from." One can't help but wonder how changed the world would be had the ancestors of the same people who use that phrase now heeded the same advice then...

Fredrik Backman is a genius. I’ve never read something so human- emotional, heartbreaking, funny, and just wonderful.

The description of dissociation from trauma is so informed and accurate here. I love these elements of education in fiction.

I don’t think I’ll ever love any series more than Shadowhunters 🥹🩷 So thankful to Netgalley for an e-book, but I need my hands on this one ASAP.

This title is absolutely poetic, and I immediately am hooked by this one. It opens up discussing synesthesia- not in a way I can relate to, but still interesting to read. This author’s experience is centered around numbers.

Already tearing up in the second poem with the line, “They don’t even know they have wings.”

A person who does not consciously remember a traumatic experience is more likely to "act out" because their body still holds the memory of the trauma, even if their mind cannot access it, leading to unconscious physical and emotional reactions in response to triggers.
