Chanda Scobee is starting Better in Black
I don’t think I’ll ever love any series more than Shadowhunters 🥹🩷 So thankful to Netgalley for an e-book, but I need my hands on this one ASAP.

“The pity would be to waste the periods of bleakness rather than to use them. Just as in winter, when the ground needed to be tilled and the dead trees pruned, the hopeless seasons of life were a chance to grapple with the hard soil of his heart and let the sadness hit him like the sharp edge of a hoe, loosening and breaking apart the unyielding ground there.”

Chanda Scobee is starting Every Word Is a Bird We Teach to Sing: Encounters with the Mysteries and Meanings of Language
This title is absolutely poetic, and I immediately am hooked by this one. It opens up discussing synesthesia- not in a way I can relate to, but still interesting to read. This author’s experience is centered around numbers.

But eventually the moment arrives when you look down and realize this is not where you get away from your inner demons. It is where you face them.”

Chanda Scobee is starting The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
A person who does not consciously remember a traumatic experience is more likely to "act out" because their body still holds the memory of the trauma, even if their mind cannot access it, leading to unconscious physical and emotional reactions in response to triggers.

“While the majority of neurotypical people have the ability to block out sensory information and give selective attention to only what is needed, many autistic people cannot filter their senses as quickly or easily. Autistic people can have difficulty with sensory processing because their nervous systems just take all of it in.“

“For many autistic people, the thalamus works differently, and filtering information can be difficult. Some autistic people might try hard to listen to you, but any background noise will be given the same amount of attention as your voice… Some people are unable to buffer the torrent of sensory information in certain environments, and when the brain does not filter the information, it becomes overloaded.”

“For autistic people, interests are not just hobbies; they are central to their well-being. Sometimes called obsessions or restricted, circumscribed, or specialized interests, these intense passions are a core and extremely common aspect of autism… This establishes familiar structure, order, and certainty- all qualities that an autistic brain loves.”

Autistic and neurodivergent people are wired differently from neurotypical people, and in these differences lie many lessons about how our perceptions and views of the world are constructed.

“… The signs were there. I mourn not being able to decipher them before. Instead, I repressed everything that was true in me and kept striving towards further defeat. If I had known, many mistakes could have been avoided. There would have been fewer blocks of stone in the road. Having grown up with undiagnosed autism is to have different difficulties that didn’t (need to) exist.“
