This is not a 'retelling' of the Odyssey. It's based on imagining what might have happened to a very minor character. And I have no problem with that per se, but be up front about it. And for goodness sake get someone with an understanding of the period to get rid of the most howling anachronisms. (I'm a mediaevalist and there are things that would be anachronisms in the middle ages, never mind Ancient Greece.)

I DNFed this. Not because I wasn't enjoying the story - I was. Not because I don't want to know what happens - I do. But I find animal cruelty as a way of making villains seem more villainous lazy and distasteful. When the puppy appeared, I braced myself for its inevitable demise. But I baled when a litter of kittens was introduced. It's not as though we don't already know the villain is a villain. Such a shame.

I am quite enjoying this but the mistakes with qp'thee' and 'thou' (basically using 'thee' for both subject and object) is grating. The research is pretty good otherwise so why this is wrong I have no idea.

Sally is 5% done with YEAR OF WONDER: Classical Music for Every Day
I picked this up for 99p on Kindle and it's already worth the money as I've already heard some new music, and the brief notes make it really enjoyable. I love classical music but I don't know very much about it so this is ideal for me. Some kind soul has compiled a Spotify playlist of all the music, which is wonderful. I have the book downloaded on my phone so it's easy to fit into the day.

I want to like this but the anachronisms are driving me insane. I will keep going because the story is fun but aargh.

I am reading this very slowly, aloud, as part of my Welsh lessons for pronunciation practice. My very patient teacher translates the words I don't know.

I am absolutely loving it so far!

I'm listening to this as an audio book - the chapters are about half an hour each so I listen to one each morning while I get ready. Really enjoying them so far.

My goodness. The gossip! It's amazing this lot managed to stop falling out with each other long enough to get elected once, let alone three times. This is a compelling (and thoroughly bitchy) read and I'm enjoying it immensely.

It took me a while to get into this but I am now well and truly into it. As in, waking my husband and pleading with him to get up and do the kids' breakfast so I can finish a chapter...

I saw this reviewed on SBTB and it looked good but expensive - but Amazon now have it for 77p so I snapped it up. Usually I'd avoid anything described as a 'screwball romantic comedy' but the premise - a gay boycott of the wedding industry until there's marriage equality - appealed to me. I'm enjoying it so far.

Hmmm. Was it a good idea to read a book about troublesome births and deaths in childbirth? Since having babies I am ridiculously oversensitive to this sort of thing...
