The cover of the book says Wilson, the description names someone else, and all the others just say “Homer.” Most laughably, some say 1st edition by Homer. 🤣

The translation In listening to on Audible is specifically Emily Watson’s, as written in 2017. A 2026 NPR Fresh air interview highlighted the differences that make it worthwhile.

I’m not an Austenite, but a big fan of Pride & Prejudice and some of her similar novels. So I was reluctant to pick up this title until I realized it was PD James. (I literally ignored learning the author when I recoiled at the title.). Then I figured she couldn’t possible butcher the story, and opened it today, finding that the prologue is absolutely delicious!

Reading this book has been quite a project, with several turns of my own perspectives, and MANY detours to learn more online about several of its fascinating creators, decision-makers, world-shakers. Unfortunately none of those lengthy rabbit warrens count toward my GR read goal, but it's been worth it.

Living the book but I keep taking tangents to learn more about a lot of the topics, so it’s taking a while.
