I realise that this isn't a book for me. Although I enjoyed the opening sequence, we seem to have left the mystery surounding Jacob's mother and her attacker and gone off on a religious tack that I am uneasy with.

I'm at the point of immersion where my dreams are Thumb landscapes.

While I loved everything about many of his other alternate history stories, this one is proving heavy going. The characters are somehow rather lifeless and unsympathetic. There's too much charging about from pillar to post by the menfolk while the womenfolk (more interesting characters) stay put at home.

I've given up.
