incredible INCREDIBLE read i have so many thoughts that need marinating

yeah no i'm abandoning this book 💯

took me awhile to get back to this, and understood why as i began reading (chapter about love/loss/life/death.) sometimes i find myself sifting through hooks’ words much like i do with tarot cards, looking for interpretations beyond what is actually being said. but then again, not always: “love knows no shame. to be loving is to be open to grief, to be touched by sorrow, even sorrow that is unending.” yes lord!

got hooked when the book started exploring the relationship between desire and shame, especially for a young woman raised in purity culture. i’m seeing / feeling so much of my younger self in this

just finished the chapter on executive dysfunction (chapter 5) and haha holy shit, it read me to filth. i’ve felt so hurt and misunderstood about so much of this … and reading this makes me feel so seen. “it’s not that i don’t want to, i’m doing my best” umm, yeah .

navigating sex and desire as someone w a history of sexual trauma is … not easy to say the least lol, but this book doesn’t feel very relevant for me to read right now as a single person. the examples are sometimes useful but i find myself mostly skipping them, especially because they feel v heteronormative. might be a hard one to finish but glad that i did read some of this

ok fine, i’ll read this damn book. it’s interesting so far, nothing that really shakes me to my core but it’s validating and easy to read !

unfortunately i will not be finishing this read because of alice walker's recent transphobic comments. feminism is about supporting the liberation of all women which obviously includes trans women and it's unbelievable that this is not obvious to so many especially within the queer community. sad to be abandoning this book but i won't make any other choice

ok ... so i've known about this book for a while but decided to ignore it because, what don't i already know + is this gonna make me spiral re: my sexual trauma? lol i've gone through over half in two sittings and it's alright so far. i don't feel like the true target audience - i am reading some helpful things, but mostly i think i'm looking for trauma- and queer- specific content which this does not specialize in.

beautiful beautiful beautiful chapter , i am so moved as always reading this book. turns out i know a lot more about love now than ever and i’m so grateful. “… when we commit to true love, we are committed to being changed, to be acted upon by the beloved in a way that enables us to be more fully self-actualized.” i love love so so much i love being human 💝🌟

the last 30 pages or so had me crying . what a beautiful portrayal of a woman’s discovery of love and hope and freedom and agency after a lifetime of violence and loss and grief. i knew this book was one of the greatest but every page , every line is a reminder

can’t. put. it. down. devastating and sadly familiar and relatable. and i’m so fucking proud of her and i see myself in parts of her and i’m so proud of me too

gift from ceej <3 picked it up tonight for a quick bath read but couldnt put it down and kept bargaining with myself for one more page for ten more pages lol

rereading so many years later and i am surprised at how much of it i still remember. what an incredible read

“at least when you hold to the dynamics of power you never have to fear the unknown; you know the rules of the power game. whatever happens, the outcome can be predicted. the practice of love offers no place of safety. we risk loss, hurt, pain. we risk being acted upon by forces outside of our control.” so familiar . love cant prevail if i’m worried about maintaining control. smth for me to learn this year💭

skipped up-and-corners for now , but - you want to know what plays are like? is one of my new favorites in this book. grief is so complicated yet so universal . it hurts very good😀
