I’m going to be so mad if I read through 180 pages with no concept of where this book was going (and waiting desperately for it to pick up) only for the entire arc to become aggressively apparent across the course of like one chapter.

Ch 2 - I’m with the author re: the commentary on “comedy” podcasts that center on the death of others, which has always sat poorly with me.

I’m not with the possible romantic subplot (??) but will accept if this is actually the killer being a weirdo.

Also why are they eating clam chowder on a first date and why is it important enough to reference MULTIPLE TIMES

I like unintentionally have visualized the main character as Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag and I love that. Just realized it last night as I was reading!

Ok currently obsessed with this book. The writing is very clean and precise.

ONE thing they really got me though is the mention of a diaphragm (contraceptive, cool!) - and how she immediately removed it after use. THAT’S NOT HOW THAT WORKS PLEASE DONT DO THAT

The narrators are in such substantially different classes - like...I am glad there was one that narrated the bulk of the book over the other.

Also a very visceral perspective of westerners pillaging and stealing from native people re: the flute stolen for a western museum.

Ok it does feel like the wrap-up is a bit swift

The complexity of each character is incredible.
I also appreciate that this is a critique of anthropology in the 20th century...which seems basically wrong and so arrogant (and echoed by Fen's character through and through).

I appreciate the written piece by Helen!!! Which contextualizes efforts made in the realm of anthropology in the early 20th century (and how western / colonial perspectives really did not have a clue in what they were doing most of the time)

I like the complexity of the characters that King cultivatess

Lily King knows grief and I appreciate that in a book more than I can articulate. Also, KING HAS SUCH A GIFT!!!!!
