Glad I went with the audio book. He's reading it himself, so it's all the more compelling.

Joan is starting Life Studies: Stories
This is the first time I haven't been able to feel enthusiasm for a work by Susan Vreeland. Returned to the library unfinished.

Joan is on page 72 of 208 of In Defense of a Liberal Education
Fareed Zakariah makes an eloquent case for the value of an education that includes the humanities and the sciences (and of its value to society). One very telling point is his reference to the Latin for such an education: the original meaning of "liberal" is "of or pertaining to free men".

What a beautiful novel! I have so many new insights into the world of the Impressionists, and particularly into the lives of Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas. I can't wait to see the exhibition of their paintings at the National Gallery of Art. The book will add a whole new dimension to my enjoyment of it.

Listening to the audio book during my commute. On disk 8 (of 30). Fascinating! Hope Steven Spielberg will come through with a movie, since "Team of Rivals" was his basis for "Lincoln".

I enjoyed the audio book on the whole, but the story really bogged down in the middle. A hundred pages/a few disks less would have been much better.

Joan is finished with The Family: Three Journeys into the Heart of the Twentieth Century
Just finished this fascinating and moving family history. Laskin's family had three main branches: one that immigrated to New York and created the Maidenform Bra company, another that immigrated to Palestine in 1930's, and very tragically, one that remained in Europe and died horribly in the Holocaust. I feel as though I know all of them.
