At first, I thought I would find the 14-year-old boy’s narrating annoying. I like it though. He has a good balance of humility and self-confidence in him. I also emphasize with his desire to protect snd provide for his family; although, I’m 20 and living in the 21st century! The ways I can provide are different, but the desire is still there.

I was intrigued by Chapter 6. In its first half, Lewis writes about the “department” of religion and how it must not be so. Religion can become an idol for Christians, keeping us from aiming instead towards God in all our actions. However, this doesn’t mean religion should necessarily be discarded. Instead, religion should be subsidiary in our search for God.

We must not be “too high-minded” in our prayer (29). If we can not share with God our childish needs and wants, we will never be able to share our mature ones.

Since reading Mere Christianity, I’ve said C.S. Lewis is a genius. I continue to stand by that. I’ve also become more interested in education, reading, and studying languages by reading this book!

I'm growing to enjoy Steinbeck's writing more and more. I looked up some pictures of him from the 60s. I think this made me trust him more as a writer for some reason.

I'm finding Steinbeck's writing a bit arrogant. At the time he's writing this, he is a well-established and -respected writer. However, I think that takes away from his experience of telling us about his "Search of America." He has strong, developed opinions, and compares much of what he sees to things far out in the world - such as interactions in in North Africa or Great Britain. I'm desiring a more humble look...

It's fascinating to listen to Steinbeck's voice, which is different than what is heard from most writers and Americans today. However, this insatiable desire to move, to go, to be anywhere but "Here" is very much still alive in the US just as it was in 1960 - especially as we're all cooped up inside from this pandemic.
