Oh Cadfael. I loved the show and ergo Derek Jacobi. So this is a pleasure to return to his world.

I’ve left this sitting for 6 months as life took over in unprecedented fashion. I am ready to go back but think I might need to reread the first 4 chapters…

Finally time to read the series, as I’ve love the Derek Jacobi show for…checks watch…30yrs now.

So far so good. It helps even more that I know the history of the Anarchy a lot better now so the backdrop makes more sense.

Audible version. Achilles has made his last stand, as John Paul Jones and John Bonham produce an epic racket.

Odysseus continues to be the great anti-hero? I’m not sure I’d go so far as to call him that since he’s the most relatable, and I know all his trials.

Jane is supposed to be dense, is that the joke? The title is ironic?

So good. One large story woven together over generations, and revealing connections to me that I Should have known, but missed, and reiterated the stuff I did know, but in better detail.

Fry is perfect to read this, and keeps my rapt attention

Made our way thru Heracles, Jason and the Argonauts, Atalanta, Oedipus (not a hero in the modern sense but a big one), and currently making towards the fate of Theseus. Such fun! Especially in audio format from Mr. Fry himself

Funny.

Far more detail explaining things about Gaunt, such as why he was so focused on Castile and being the ruler/power behind that. Also a good clear example of how he ended up Duke of Lancaster and so rich. Also a great illustration of why Leicester was so steadfastly loyal to the Lancasters, and in turn, John, when he became the Duke (son in law of the late Duke Henry)

Building on what I already know of Gaunt, which is, that I like him, and that he seems to be his generation’s Richard Duke of York (the Protector, not his son Richard III) in that he was close to the crown, had very good ideas and put his sons into power thru his hard work and mechanations. I’m happy to hear otherwise too!

I’m savouring this like a fine whisky.
