2.5 I’ve been striking out — really drawn to all the topics, the satire. first half with the baby shower I was intrigued at the mystery or conspiracy of the smoke. by the second half I was over the characters they became mouth pieces for philosophical monologues in an over-saturated world. had a lot of potential but ran for big plot & chapter cliff hangers

I can’t put my finger on this but there’s something about this so far that feels more…cutesy…than I expected

we are 10% in and there’s been a vicious rape scene ended with a pencil gorging, overt discrimination, the c word 2x, suicide, dead parents, evangelicals. where’s the cooking

my brother convinced me to keep going bc it sounds like I haven’t reached the actual meat of the story yet. (how!!) so we trudge on. I’m feeling more open minded after the break

hour 18.5 out of 48 and I don’t think I can finish this. it’s a lot of interiority because these characters are alone or the secondary characters they encounter will die. though the characters are supposed to be despicable and run the range of human depravity, the female characters are tools to provoke sexual feelings & the non-white characters have no names. he has much better books
