Why do we have a separate storyline with Ned?! He was the least likable character for me in Tidelands and now I have to wade through Ned’s adventures in New England every other chapter .. ugh. Just stick with the women in London I have many questions about that 21 year period that need answers. So far we’ve lost 1 star

How long is this book?
Now we have Dot dealing with her childhood trauma using memory reframing, a psychiatric technique first used in the 1970s… but we’re here in March 1960.

What time period was this again? My guess is the author originally started in the 90s but the characters would have been too old to have lived through WWII and still have been young enough for the story
No way 1960s shack ups were happening the way these people so casually did.
Police caution when arrest made wasn’t used till 94

I had a preconceived notion based on the hype for this book that I’d be disappointed by religion bashing and it wouldn’t be as good as everyone says. After 200 pages I’m not 100% certain the author is bashing religion even though there is some anti religion commentary from the main characters. Hm

OK, WTF does “careened my head around them” mean? That doesn’t make any sense! This book is just ticking me off with terrible writing and vocabulary.

I rolled my eyes at “the underneath of my bra”, and “the piercing of a ring rips through the air”, but how in the hell does she careen her head around some shelves?

And lets throw in the We’re all just people and there are no good and bad people, just people who do things that are bad sometimes trope. Uh, I reject that premise that there are no good and bad people. Hitler was evil. Stalin, same. I don’t think anyone is born evil, but if you do wicked, evil things, sorry, you’re evil. So I’m rolling my eyes a bit already.

OY. I can tell this book is going to be a beaut. How many heavy topics can we introduce in the first 25 pages? let’s see… surgeon has just watched a child die from his sibling shooting him, Lily has a father who abused the mother, she just came from his funeral where she gave a bad eulogy, Lily probably got raped by a homeless guy named Atlas, and the doctor she just met has already mentioned having sex with her

Only 16 pages in and already feeling regret. The character names are beyond ridiculous and the main character is kind of annoying to me already. Well, let’s see how far I get. She makes incomplete sentences that start with “But” a lot and maybe that is part of my annoyance.

Still no Philosophy Club in a book with that phrase in the title, but Isobel is a bit more interesting. She does wax on about philosophy which I tend to skim over so I hope its not important to solving the mystery. Changed narrator to the niece for a chapter, which was weird for a minute.

I want to like this book. The heroine is stuffy, opinionated and gets definitely philosophical, and I’m wondering when we start finding out about the murder, and if this “Philosophy Club” ever actually meets. It’s 100 pages in and there has been a death, but not much has been found out about it at all.

Seriously we have the daughter espousing communism? Ugh. “Serfs against landlords throughout history. Marx and Engels are right. If there was only one class, …it would be a better world.”

Rolling my eyes hard at this. I get that this was an actual struggle for the migrants and they did want to unionize but come on.
