So... are you sure this is not a romance? Because its hinting heavy at that. Even with Nick apparently being näcken in training it seems like a heavy handed love story.

Kuang’s Juniper embodies her critique of white writers who publish stories about minorities they don’t belong to—shallow in research, entitled, and critical of minority authors for not explaining cultural nuances. While the critique is valid, the narrative mirrors Juniper’s arrogance, making the text as condescending as its protagonist.

The fight scenes are really god damn silly actually. DnD is just by far the most wack magic system ever constructed. At the same time, did a character just forced into a rather dubious consensual relationship and its hand waved because "she´s hot?" and "we also wiped some of his memories? I mean, I know this is 100% on brand for the Drow and I'm here for it but does Salvatore realize what the fuck he just wrote?

You know, maybe I'm just not really in the mood for this. Its just not hitting the right spots today. As in. I'm bored.

Well, it still reads like TV. Still lack a certain something but not tired yet.

Whelp this one has been laying on the shelf for a long while. I start to doubt I will ever finish it.

Bunch of misfits who all aren't quite as cool as the author tries to make them be are doing post-grad thing. They all hate eachother. I can see why my app thinks this is a Gideon look-alike. It has many of the same beats. We now only need weird toxic 3-some and a human sacrifice for power that might or might not go sideways. Digging the Dark Academia vibes, not digging the magical school element necessarily though.

Its still not really gripping me, the voice's too... passive. Its descriptions sometimes randomly falling into almost science babble there to show of Sue Burkes research. I never really get a good feeling for the characters and their plight. Its not really, doing it for me.

Oh Jesus this is taking a dark turn. The whole tone is generally darker, less concerned with the Aliens more concerned with trauma, with this weird dynamic between Cora and Kaveh. But I need to ask... Lindsay, hon, are you ok?

Somehow I feel like I have read this before, but instead its also that one book with the spiders on the planet. Children of Time I think it waa called. The prose seems weirdly passive though. More show, less tell.

Ugh I hate soul bonds. But I will happily read about an argument on the legal personhood of non-humans. So I'm still going strong.

Yeah we're getting there. Not sure if I like it as much as I liked the martian though. Its novelty has gone stale 3 books ago. Still way better than Seveneves which is the book I'm stuck with this week T.T

So after a 600 page infodump that resulted in the setup we are finally at a place where the title starts to make sense. Honestly I'm starting to understand why so many in the reviews have dropped this at the 75% mark. It is nearly impossible to care anymore. I'm however slogging through because I did not take anything else with me on vacation this week.

I wonder if it ever goes really into how this complete extinktion effect has on the human mind and general populas or just stay on the science bit. I feel this is going to lack an actual emotional core and a more relatable goal than the rather abstract "we need to safe human kind". I wonder if it will go into the question if human kind is even worth saving.
