Off to a great start. Interesting characters with dense back stories.
The emerging theme seems to be about the struggle to get out of trouble and poverty and the struggle to stay out of trouble and poverty and the difficulty of escaping your past.

I like the commentary about robots and dumbing down the work ethic of man.

Wow. Augustus’ words to Darrow are meaningful today. He speaks no lies about earth.

Earth has been decimated due to greed and a new political system has emerged in space from it. Golds are altruistic but also not naive. However, they’ve created a caste system that thrives on the populous being ignorant and naive

“In politics there are no people, only ideas; no feelings, only interests. In politics, you don’t kill a man, you remove an obstacle, that’s all.”

So much like the Red Rising trilogy where the Golds remove men who stand in their way in cold calculating way. Humans are pawns in politics.

The people of space (pilgrims) revolted against the people of earth (colonizers) for their independence. And they destroyed earth in the process.

Ive enjoyed the themes of family and community. Darrow is seems committed to these as a way of staying true to him self and his mission.

Interesting nods to Greek mythology. I wonder if this is foreshadowing and there will be more. Ares the brutal god of war, Persephone the goddess of spring and the underworld, and a quick nod to her husband (Hades, lord of the underworld). Do the Sons of Ares believe in Greek mythology?

Pre civil war expansion and Wild West, Mexican American war was a parallel with blood meridian.

Expansionism remains a theme in the late 1800s as US uses the Monroe doctrine and underconsumption at home to justify it. War with Spain for Cuba. And proceed to get Guam, philipppenes from them. Also get Hawaii, PR around this time. War in the Philippines around 1899 and many smaller engagements throughout the world. .

Very interesting take on war by the judge. War and morality. Strong vs weak. Man born to play games and war is the ultimate game. Reminds of trump and Greenland and Putin and Ukraine.

Listening to the audiobook. Zinn’s narration of quotes is striking and off putting shockingly funny and slightly bizarre.

It’s so descriptive then all of a sudden there is action. And the action, when it finally happens, is so intense

Great visuals of the battle at Gettysburg. The book provided a good feel of the characters and setting. I look forward to reading more about the civil war and one day hope to visit Gettysburg to see the landscape in person. Others things that will stick with me are the relationships between the men and the way they were able to stay in the present by setting aside thoughts about the past and future.
