The Vegetarian is a modern classic.

Han Kang is a versatile writer. I am hooked to the story, and can't put it down (but had to, to finish my projects). There's so much here that is devastating and violating, and it's heart-wrenching. I immediately recalled Sabato's The Tunnel in terms of rush and raw emotions.

SPOILER NOTICE:

I've seen the public humiliation so many times, in the family dinner scene. It was heart-breaking. I am so angry. The rape, horrible as it is, was swept up by the author in a brilliant literary move as to ostensibly downplay it -- as if nothing really had happened. The dinner scene now, not exaggerated but emphasized and pushed to the forefront, is what mastery of the written word looks like.

The characters are getting on my nerves (in a good way). At first, I felt that they were ridiculous caricatures; but then, I realized how simple and simplistic (and often, how utterly superficial) people are. I resonated with the restaurant scene at the first chapter.

This novel is very fresh, and it starts out strong and is imposing. The author is a competent novelist.

Chapters 23 and 24 left. I'm going to read them next week, so that my advisor doesn't strangle me over not focusing. xD

I'm on the chapter on Time-Dependent Perturbation Theory, right after Bound-State PT. Everyday I tell myself, I'm going to finish that chapter today, and everyday I play videogames instead of studying. :(

I'm almost done with this book. I am reading the chapter on Time-Dependent Perturbation Theory (right after Bound-State PT). Everyday, I say I'll read it tomorrow, and I do everything but that! :(

From page #1, I knew I was reading a masterpiece. I took this book with me while proctoring an E&M exam. (I already told my students that you can't ask any questions, school policy, so I had the time for myself: What I do is that I quickly solve the exam in the first 5 minutes of proctoring to make sure there aren't any errors. Now, I started reading.)

I was so absorbed by the book, it is PHENOMENAL! FROM PAGE #1!

Chapters done so far: 1-12; 16-17.

Onto Quantum Mechanical Nonlinear Optics. That ought to be interesting!

I'm reading this to explain to my students the topics which were, at times, inadequately elaborated in their assigned textbooks. This is a superb text, and I recommend it fully.

Very tough book.

A very tough book. This is my third time through.

I have finished recently books that I've yet to review: Struggling Upward (Horatio Alger Jr.), I can't Breathe (David Horowitz), and for the 3rd time The Anti-Chomsky Reader (David Horowitz), The Metaphysics of Mind (Anthony Kenny), Secrets of a Webcam Girl (Anabelle Baxter), Maverick (Jason Riley), Dome of the Hidden Pavilion (James Tate), Statistical Optics (Joseph Goodman), and Get Organized (Ciara Conlon).
