The SGJ story is giving me heart palpitations

While I am greatly enjoying the vast majority of these pieces, it drives me insane when one of the authors insists that Lolita could not get published today. Clearly they have never heard of (or read) Tampa, The End of Alice, Lamb, My Absolute Darling, etc etc.

I’ve seen a lot of reviews negatively saying that this book is far less sad/emotional than A Little Life but oh my GOD did I just sob my eyes out. This is a quieter book, but equally as compelling and depressing

I truly can’t get past the character whose very accurate and realistic mental illness involves *check notes* intrusive thoughts about a single comic involving cannibalism they read a decade ago. Totally how that works!

The writing is stunning but oh my GOD is the narrative boring. 35% of the way in and we are just getting to the content in the blurb. Also, given the Armie Hammer uhhh situation, I think I picked a terrible time to read a book where the main heroine’s personality seems to be “likes when men hit her” 😬

This is a dumb thing to be bothered by but the main character keeps describing football as “eleven players each team” and it has me questioning if the author has ever watched a football game? Very strange phrasing, because there are... 11 players on defense 11 players on offense. Saying “each team” makes it seem like the entire team is 11 people. In total. Is this a dumb thing to obsess over? Yes. But still.

I am 70% of the way through this book and not a single theory about the case has been discussed in depth. How... can you make this boring?!

The constant mentioning of specific songs makes me feel like I am reading a new adult drama. Which... yeah, this is.

This is a lovely book but the idea that anyone would consider Columbus Circle “outside of Manhattan” has me absolutely sobbing w laughter, authors please do the bare minimum of research about nyc if you are going to write about it
