Hungry for some meat. So far not too much is going on. I do like the tone of the narrative.

“Her body, with her unadorned shorts and naked torso, reminded me of the little green peppers that I had fumbled with as a child in the fields under the blazing summer sun.”

It's 11:41pm and I think I've officially lost the plot. I can't even envision this. Body like a green pepper. Is it really that funny or am I just overtired? My dreams will be dominated by green peppers tonight, I can already tell.

DNF’ing

The only thing keeping me sane during 12-3-30.

I’ve been slogging through this for the past few days. I usually read books this length in a 2 days max. Maybe a change in format would be best so on the queue for the audiobook I go.

Once I put this down, I didn’t want to pick it back up. Maybe I’ll come back someday.

So many interesting ideas on every page: octagon wheeled bikes, 20 hour days, a home world with only 1 city, the Awakening and the Parting Promise, the moon as a home world, gods and child gods, buildings made of milk proteins and amulets made of stabilizing pectin.

Welp… 😩

Of all the things I imagined, this was not one of them. I can’t decide if this is better or worse. 🥴

Also, if you’ve ever spent freshman year lost, internally sad, and thinking too much— woah, this book will be slightly hard to read.

I’ve been there. Even missed my own first class because I was late and too anxious to interrupt, too afraid of everyone seeing me be late, and too embarrassed to watch other people make space for me.

Natalie’s personality and thoughts feel very true to that experience.

Finally someone doing the lost, listless young woman trope properly!

Woah, am I the only one who found the second chapter disorienting with too many perspectives in a short page run?

The book opens in 3rd person narration from Big Ammachi’s perspective, but suddenly, we shift to her sister-in-law’s then back again before the page ends. Then 1-2 pages later, there’s an actual omniscient narrator calling Ammachi “our young bride” and expositing for the rest of the chapter?

Can I say that Sophie Mackintosh’s female gaze is so accurate. Just like in The Water Cure, the way her characters watch other people is so intense and slightly erotic.

She does small, insular communities so well.

Finally, we’ve seen The Crack.

Just realized this author also wrote “The Water Cure.” I did like that one but I wasn’t totally satisfied with the ending and the hidden twist. Let’s see how this one goes.

I’ve got 1 day left on my library loan, but I still haven’t picked this up in days. Currently about 25% through, but I’m going to go ahead and call it.

Why did I go through pages of Charles Manson talk. Druggie mom talk. Fucking baristas and masturbating to online dating profiles???

Where is all of that in the synopsis?

I feel like this book is so aimless and has no idea what it wants to cover. It’s good when it’s good, but then you’re back to pages and pages of… stuff?
