the inspection is such a clever way to essentially infodump all the exposition on the reader and crichton is so careful about how he does it because you're fully away this isn't something any old writer could get away with but you don't mind it here. like it's a lot of information to take in all at once but a bit like andy weir's science, it's fes to you in such a digestible way

"It's rather like my asking you whether, on a billion dollars in income, you had to pay tax. You wouldn't need to pull out your calculator to check. You'd know tax was owed." oh, ian malcolm, buddy, if only it were that simple

the structure of this is scratching my brain in the most satisfying of ways

"Oh, no. My mother painted purely for her own enjoyment."

the symbolic annihilation of women in this story already is so artfully done. such a subtle removal of identity, agency and skill. to a son, a mother can never produce art, she is simply a vessel meant to serve others and herself.

the way the sex scene between ursa and absalom is written like a horror.

i'm going to have to wait until the end before i can pass judgement on the story itself but if i was rating this for the writing style alone it'd be ten fucking stars. the most delicious prose i have consumed in a loooong while

okay maybe it's my fault for accidentally picking up heterosexual YA but tell me WHY a 16 year old girl is choosing a 300 year old man who looks young and hot instead of the childhood best friend she describes as beautiful every other sentences and loves to the point of defying the laws of magic and nature ?????

the scene where katniss comes home from the woods and the peacekeepers are waiting for her expecting her to be caught on the other side of the fence but she comes home to her mother and prim and haymitch and peeta are there too and it's so sweet and domestic and i don't know man it just gets me very emotional every time i read it
