Never have I ever wanted to cringe so often at a book whilst being unable to put it down??

Absolutely gutting that I’m on the last book of this incredible fantasy series

I’ve literally read the first 15 pages and I’m enjoying it so wholeheartedly. What a joy.

‘We are all, Esme decided, just vessels through which identities pass: we are lent features, gestures, habits, then we hand them on. Nothing is our own. We begin in the world as anagrams of our antecedents’

‘The natural world surely has an intrinsic value which goes beyond its utility to us as a resource.’

Finally picked up this book again after a big pause and oh my days it’s so wonderful. My perfect kind of nature writing: slow and easygoing and observant and kind and also about the Highlands which is always a plus. So nice to dip back into!

Really enjoying the balance of this book between accessibility and sciencey bits. Have stopped a bunch of times already and gone ‘huh’ as I’ve recognised something deeply relevant that I’d never considered before. V interesting!

Finding this one a bit more slow-going than The Island of Missing Trees, but still enjoying the rich descriptions and character development
