Putting this on pause for to either resume or restart in the future. I'm not in the mood for this right now. While contemporaries like Huysmans or Bloy's mentor Barbey d'Aurevilly approach similar moods of reactionary despair, I find their sardonicism to be tempered with more potent blasts of (admittedly often bleak) humour.
I've enjoyed all of Bloy's shorts that I have read, so perhaps I'll check out more of those.
