This is actually a DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE. So many urban fantasies about “whooooo hey manic pixie dreamgirl is the CHOSEN ONE! Also magic! So special!” And this is: she’s 40 and divorced and a mom and now she’s ready to start her life because she’s got perspective and experience.

It’s an immensely complex world, but it’s set up well and there’s nothing boring in it so far. I keep thinking I’ll put it down and go make dinner or something, but it’s fascinating and I just keep reading.
It’s self-published, and I’m glad it is, because a regular publishing house would have forced it to be trimmed down. But it doesn’t need trimming.

Plot just barely sputtering along. In another book, we’d be in the first third and I’d be waiting for things to take off. With this one, it might never take off.

I am 55% done with the book and the plot ONLY NOW started moving. Holy hell, if I wanted this much understanding of inter-relationship poly dynamics, I’d be IN a poly relationship. It’s not interesting to anyone not in the relationship. After the last one, I thought maybe Hamilton had actually listened to an editor and figured out that her readers wanted plot. But no.

I read this when it first came out. Reading it now - as a middle-aged mother of daughters - is an entirely different experience.
I wish I hadn’t waited so long to re-read it. I remember liking it, but it didn’t break my heart so much back then.

I usually don’t CRY over sociology books, but here we are.

Way better than I’d expected. How has this book not gotten more press?
