Hont isn't writing a monograph, but instead writes an extended introduction and select academic articles. Hont intersects modern political theory with Enlightenment philosophers to show how modern political theory came about by an introduction of commerce to the reason of state. The best part about this work is that it isn't strictly intellectual history but a merger of intellectual history with political history.

The idea that we are living in a second Gilded Age asks us to compare the 19th century era with our own. It is Fraser's contention that they are fundamentally different times. Fraser's mastery of cultural and intellectual sources provides an explanation of his paradox - the original Gilded Age was rebellious, but our own age was not.
