This was an interesting unintended companion read to The Idiot. There are many parallels between Werther and Prince Myshkin. They differ in their romantic dispositions (where Werther instead parallels Rogozhin) which reinforces the holiness of Myshkin's chastity. I wonder if Dostoevsky had this book in mind when he conceived of his beautiful man. I have more thoughts on this but only 420 characters to relate them..

This short novella published in 1906 remains, to this day, one of the very, very few explicitly gay works of Russian literature.

"And people saw that every sort of beauty, every sort of love was from the gods, and they became free and bold, and they grew wings."

Craziest ending of any Dostoevsky novel ever I was like shaking and sweating I actually felt sick. I had to take breaks between paragraphs during the last chapter. I'm never recovering from this one.

Myshkin I would die for you Nastasya I would die for you Ganya I would not die for you but I really do enjoy reading about your endless shame and humiliation. And Totsky... if there ever was someone who deserved the guillotine.

The author definitely has a little crush on King Zog why is he talking so lovingly about Zog's "delicate white hands" and his "slender narrow hipped figure". Even funnier when you know that the only ratemyprofessor review for this guy calls him out for being a conservative who defends the British Empire.

I had eeen this book described before as Dennis Nilsen (and Dahmer, I haven't gotten there yet) fanfiction, but I'm still shocked by how literal that description is?? I can't believe how many details the author has left unaltered about not only him but his victims. Notably his internal monologue is eerily similar to how he writes in his autobio, and this came out before that was published!

THAT was the famous elevator scene?? Dostoyevsky has set my expectations too high for homoerotic subtext in classic lit... I am enjoying this so far though, I like how dreamy the prose is.

‘They’re not good,’ Kirilov suddenly began again, ‘because they don’t know they’re good. When they find out, then they won’t rape little girls. They have to find out that they’re good, and everyone will become good all at once, every last one.’

This exchange keeps making me laugh:

["Excellente amie!’ his voice suddenly began to quiver. ‘I… I could never have imagined that you would venture to marry me off… to another… woman!’

‘You’re not a young girl, Stepan Trofimovich; only young girls are married off, but you yourself are getting married,’ Varvara Petrovna hissed venomously.]

Peter carried this burden secretly for a year until he publicly confessed to a sin that was now beyond concealment, begging that his “uterus” be opened. When no one dared to fulfill this bizarre entreaty, the hapless priest went into labor and died in a frenzy." THEY HAD MPREG IN 1100??
