it's been years since I read a Golden Age Morrison novel for the first time and HOLY FUCK the voice and writing of this book.

Wowowow this book was definitely written in 1999. multiple "well-intentioned"(??) T-slurs before page 20.

For the first few chapters, I thought this book was boring, didn't get what it was doing. But I have loved (ok, LIKED) all of Tana French's other books, so I kept going. And it got all creepy and mysterious just like the others, In the Woods specifically.

so... this book starts with someone in an institution in Spain and then moves to Tangier... is this just a hetero reimagining of the lives of Jane and Paul Bowles? will there be a twist? don't tell me?

also lol @ the goodreads blurb that describes JB's paintings as Basquiat-like when he's an old-fashioned realist painter. do u even art bro.

if you've been reading reviews of this book, you've heard that it's depressing and bleak and even Dickensian. what we mean is, Giant Trigger Warning for Absolutely Everything. I have been losing a lot of sleep bc I can't put it down but mostly bc reading it is kinda traumatic. I'm sure I will ultimately say it was a Good Book. I'm in it now; the only way out is through.
