Nisha takes 1 step forward then 2 hard steps back in attempting to regain something of the life she just lost - yet manages to maintain an ally in the process (though barely just).

Sam oscillates between being more independent & self-loving vs pouring more into her depressed husband's cup in attempts to restore him.

Still a very quick, easy read with distinct characters. Easy-to-follow plot but not yet predictable.

The plot thickens! Sam's luck evens out, & she spends a morning as her usual self. Meanwhile, Nisha's blackmail she's relying on as her main hope for survival falls into the hands of someone else.

Sam gets a boost from a pair of designer heels. They help her appear professional, converse with other women via shared fashion passion, & gain her compliments on her appearance.

Nisha is locked out of all her accounts & hotel room by her well-to-do husband. He remains in full control, while she's out on the street in a bathrobe & no way to pay for an outfit that will allow here to even merely get by for the day.

Emoni tries to decide what topic in her life is "compelling" for a college essay, and a new boy arrives to homeroom.

Emani begins opening up about her experience as having been a pregnant teen. She weighs her obligations at home & financial situation against the opportunity to begin her dream studying in a culinary program that includes a trip to Spain.

Ok. I know 5 pages is hardly enough to judge something by - but I'm telling you... I'm really excited for this book. I've already encountered 4 points of poetry, 1 point of humor, & 1 point of radiating love that I'm obsessed with. We'll see if the new-agey-ness of it wears thin along the way or not, but I have high hopes. <3

Evelyn is ever-closer to finding her happy, & then the dramatic turning point happens. Will it be the thing that forces her & Beckett back together?

Mutiny begins, but at a slow go. The loyal team sheltered in a fort already on Treasure Island, while the pirates took the ship & try encroaching the safe-haven. In a pause in combat during day, the doctor seeks potential aide of a marooned man. During night, boy Jim decides to be a hero, find the marooned man's handmade boat, row out to the ship, & cut away the anchor. Peril now finds him caught in the ship's wakes.

There are talks of mutiny just before the cry is given for Land Ho. With navigation of the open sea done, they begin the next navigation - of the waterways by boat from the ship into the mainland.

Billy Bones had one drink too many. A treasure map is uncovered by an overly privileged lot who dare to think they can go a-sea to find it. The crew is split on who is trustworthy to sail with, & who among them may be a charlatan. Time will tell.

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour ends. Mention of the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour & his desire to get into 19th-20th century American art collecting.

In "the Chimes" - we find 9 yrs have passed & Trotty's now on a vision of the future as a ghost, similar to Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol". But instead of his own wicked deeds, a commentary on humanity - we have a commentary on poverty, classism, etc. I'm not sure how his fortune is supposed to change by the end? But we shall see!

Still a little unclear on what haunts the man... I THINK I get it, but something in the way it was written was hard to follow. Not too old-timey, but still - difficult. Glad this one seems to be ending on a happy enough note, & excited to back track & read the story I saved for last, so then I can get on with reading other things.

Partially through "the Haunted Man"... Not too sure yet exactly how he's haunted? But he just arrived at the business/home of a poor family who's housing a young man. We'll see what comes of that?

Should be quick & easy. Narrated 1st-person by a 17yo girl. At least so far. Unsure if other title character has own narration. Bad: author TRIES for sardonic teen humor, but falls flat. Not quippy enough. & blazes thru relationships vs lingering & developing them. Good: already a v profound examination of "Why am I dying?" Confident there'll be tender moments & more interesting views. Curious to see how it unfolds!
