Laura Clawson is reading The World-Ending Fire: The Essential Wendell Berry
After reading the Unsettling of America, I wanted to dig further into Berry's essays to try and grasp his posture towards the world more. This was the perfect volume to do so. Most influential essays I'd return to: Faustian Economics, Quantity Versus Form, and Feminism, the Body and the Machine. His writing about household, land, fidelity to a place, and walking and working carefully in the world are priceless.

"Something else to consider is the way the woodburning stove brings people into a very direct relationship with the weather. You are your own thermostat, you are the connections link between subzero temperatures outside and the relative warmth within. When you heat with wood...you start your fight against the cold. It's bitter and it bites, but you can do something about it. "

"The scent of fresh wood
Is among the last things you will forget
When the veil falls.
The scent of fresh white wood
In the spring sap time.:
As though life itself walked by you,
With dew in it's hair...." Hans Børli

When I was with Garrpe we at least could share our fear as one shares bread, breaking it in two; bit now I was all alone in the black sea of the night and must brake upon myself the cold and the darkness and everything else
