A refreshing, modern view from Musu—the ‘Arab’ killed at the hands of a French colonial settler in Albert Camus’s The Stranger. Though we never hear his name, nor him as a human but rather a mere object, Kamel Daoud does an incredible job at portraying this side of the story—one that feels more real and sincere and messy and human.

Edmond is a great guy—perhaps too great. I am sure that Dumas will bring to light some brutish traits of this man, yet, I am finding it hard to see any now—if there are any. I wonder if his journey for vengeance will be the light? Or, if the treasure he may discover bring out his inherent greed? I am not sure, but perhaps one of these will make clear that Edmond is not the perfect protagonist.
