Sometimes the writing feels weird. Like how the narrator will tell you what's about to happen, summarize the next few pages, and then you have to watch it happen "in real time" with dialog. Basically repeating itself twice.

Relationship between Archie Goodwin (our narrator) and Wolfe is pretty entertaining. Archie can be an insufferable smart ass sometimes and Wolfe an annoying eccentric, but man are there fun scenes with them. The way they and everyone else that lives with them gets excited about orchids for example.

Lot of casual racism and sexism, especially from Archie. Not sure about Wolfe yet.

Separating the main characters was a great idea and long overdue.

Every line out of Ellery's mouth is extremely smug and patronizing.

Ellery comes off a a snarky bully rather than a genius.

I have problems with Djuna.

Man really struggling to stay interested. Mystery isn't interesting and everything just feels dry.

Also can't help but keep thinking about why Ellery is allowed to even be there.

Struggling with this one. Feels dry and more like a police procedural than I expected. Also didn't know I would miss the first person point of view from classic Christie or Doyle mysteries.

Lastly the dialog is a little hard for me to understand sometimes.

This is like HARD fantasy. With its own weird rules and world building that they just drop you into and you have to figure out what a "mai-lantern" or a "fernwall" is through context. Using less archetypes that usually just fall into the standard LoTR style of fantasy.

I should have known when I opened it up and it had a fucking AoT ass map and military heirarchy line on the first few pages.
