The story can't decide whether Shesheshen is a horrifying monster that eats people or just misunderstood and outcast from humans, and it's weaker for trying to have both. It wants to have its cake and eat it too

I appreciate how easy Kingfisher's style is to read, but so far it's a little too slow burn and contemporary for it. I want the horror to really kick in

The author really loves ending every short chapter on a cheap cliffhanger which REALLY works against it building any actual stakes

I'm still not certain if the high fantasy/modern world mix is successful but GOD I cannot put this down

Mmmm not a fan of the mc and narrative disparaging another character's accent and poor language skills. Yes an Egyptian judging a rich British woman living in Cairo's Arabic accent is a reversal of what is standard, but it's still an annoying detail

I have no idea where this is going but rn I hope it ends with Gideon managing to kill immortal king-god dude and destroy their societies

Wow it does a good job of making me despise Harrow the instant she shows up

In the Court of the Dragon- the story takes place in a mass, and there were lots of little details that differed from my own experiences of masses that I found unsettling. Then I realized those differences are just because this was written pre-Vatican Council II, and now I'm fascinated by this whole idea

The Repairer of Reputations- not a fan of insanity as the source of horror, but the speculative 1920's was interesting to see

The Mask- I'm pleased no one turned out to be a villain in this one, but polyamory would have solved all their issues. All 3 of them were obviously in love with each other

I loved the movie, and while the horrors in the book aren't as extreme as the movie, they drag on for much longer. It's been hard to find the energy to get through all the terrible things that happen in the second part

It has taken me over a year to get my hands on this book and it was absolutely worth the wait so far. I've read half of it in a single sitting, and the only reason I stopped was a old guy wouldn't stop trying to talk at me while I was trying to read and my eyes were dry

And If the Body Were Not the Soul- it's an interesting world, and I did like the story, but the mentally-connecting-with-the-tentacle-alien scenes were so weirdly sexual that I kept expecting it to actually turn into tentacle porn

The Pornographer's Assistant- I've never read such a bizarre sex scene. Whatever you're imagining based on the name, trust me, you are nowhere close

The Poet's Child- I've never seen such a prolonged story not use any pronouns and do it so seamlessly.

Juilet and Juilet(te)- I didn't think I was very into this one until I got to the last page and almost started crying out of nowhere

I like the characters, but it just meanders sooooo muuuuuch. Stop dawdling and get to the point already

The beginning of Kvothe's tale really drags, especially the Tarbean part, but it's picking up now that Kvothe has more permanent and interesting characters to bounce off of in the University part

Still enjoying it, but I also still can't keep track of any of the politics, which is pretty dang important to a spy thriller

1 chapter in, I like the excessively flowery language. It's flowery enough to set the tone/build the setting, but not so much that it gets in the way of reading. But chapter 1 is too early for a political info dump. I'm still trying to remember the main character's name, I'm sure as hell not going to remember how this fantasy government's democracy works or their politicians' names or policies or scandals

It's fun, and I really like the characters, but it's just not grabbing me yet like Riordan's previous series have. Although that is probably in part due to me not having time to sit down and power through the entire book in one sitting

The first half was great and hilarious, but it's losing steam fast. And out of the entire cast, did you really have to maim the gay guy? -.-

It's shit like this that makes me wonder wtf is wrong with straight people. How can sex possibly be THAT important to you, Goddamn it, just control your dick, it really shouldn't be that hard you creep

It's certainly not bad so far, but it is constrained by the limitations of its genre and the fact that it's a high school romance.
