I want to have written this book if this book were about a different place and a different time and a different body of literature

It’s fascinating to me how much sheer wordage could be removed from this book without really changing the text narratively or stylistically. It’s been a while since I’ve read mass market fiction but that’s surely one reason the books are always so long.
Is the repetition a holdover from when books like this were published in installments? A “previously on/in” in case you forgot?

This is beside the point (the point being that this book is excellent) but Kokos and Bartimaeus would get along so well

Maybe I’m just tired but I’m pretty sure at one point one of these interviewers attributes the ontological argument for God’s existence to one of Bashevis’ characters

Having flashbacks to rereading Spinning Silver—I forgot like half of what happens in this book. Sure is a long way to this small angry planet!

I don’t get I don’t get it I don’t GET it…Am I reading a different book than the overwhelming number of people who seem to love this?? Is the narrator of the audiobook just THAT hard for me to listen to? (It could be that, tbh.)

Wild to read something like THIS of all things and have to accept that I’m not the target demo…but I’m just gonna have to deal with it.
This is (understandably) written for a younger audience and (understandably) written not to alienate people coming to it with less prior knowledge.
I still have some issues with the pacing, but I’ll probably abstain from a real rating/review when I finish.

I wish I could figure out why this book is starting to annoy me because on paper (lol) it’s a really fun story. It’s at least partially this particular reader—any characters from the UK are fine, but the rest are regrettably atrocious.
Partially also that I lost interest the “second” narrator pretty quickly. She starts out so interesting and then idk, it became a slog for me when the novelty wore off.

This book wasn’t my jam right off the bat, but it snuck up on me—a little over a third done and I’m looking back now and realizing I’m really invested. Always a fun surprise!

Most of the best parts are the direct quotes from the podcast and I guess I deserved that
