Finally picking this back up again after being sick for a month with Covid and flu. The chapter on Capitalism was astounding. So much of it put into words that debunks trickle down economics. I’m now reading the politics chapter. I’m coming at this after a fresh new found perspective on WWII and nationalism and the rise of evil while many of the Republicans call for Christian nationalism and sides with Putin war.

This chapter was maybe the hardest to get through. This where I could see that white fear and rage were inherited in me. I have and will continue to be the chain that breaks this in my legacy. We will fly out BLM flag and we will March beside our brother and sisters for justice. I’m just sad it only took until now, for us white Allie’s to see the truth and know the truth behind police brutality in this country.

The chapter on race is heartbreaking. Made it legal to rape Black woman to produce more slaves. Then blamed Black women for being promiscuous and having babies for welfare today. I hate the history of this country and this is the exact reason this history needs to be told.

Beautiful voice written with such Grace that is needed to re-educate the boiling over lies this nations history is built upon.

Haunting read that came out 15 years ago, and I’m reading about the plan to over turn Wade as it’s happening. All in the name of Jesus. It’s heartbreaking to know people see God’s love as power instead of just that, love. I weep.

Haunting that the “Idea” is merely about power. The “Idea” that God favors the evil and hates the poor is blasphemous, yet here we read that the roots of this evil go all the way back to the piety of the puritans. While reading, you realize all the little people being manipulated, gaslighted, and lied to that has brought us to the reign of satan today, was all done in vain. Freedom is a myth. Haunting.

So far we’re stranded on a beautiful island, but left to care for ourselves. We’ve got a native man not in the mood to babysit and now a girl self harming. Cutting. It’s taking me forever to read this book. I don’t want to read about rich white girls in distress or their need to save a girl from cutting. Still I will press on.

I’m having a hard time getting into this book and I usually love and devour Picoult. I think it’s reading about the beginning of the pandemic. Not only ptsd triggering of those first few days, but also to read it from a well off POV. It seems odd to me that in only two years, the pandemic killed the American Dream. We used to dream about vacations like this. Make life goals like marriage and kids. It’s old now.

Shit got real, real fast. Lot of shooting on the fly, but still believable I think.

I like Theo. He represents the men I love. He represents the openness and guilt that comes with being a work white male.

I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about this book. I feel like people are being too hard on the author. They’re only seeing the surface. And yea, there is a lot of tabu, woke language. But, the gentrification truth needs to be read by us white people. The author does an amazing job of writing emotion and hard truth in her language. The metaphors are some of the most beautiful lines I’ve ever read. Fuck raisins.

This book is good. I’m in love with Sydney and her panic attacks. Theo sounds fun too. The Karen characters make me mad.

I’m in love with this author’s metaphors and language. Definitely taking my time with this one to absorb the voice.
Love the HoodApp at the end of each chapter. Hate the color of my skin when it comes to ignorant Karen’s. 😓

The adverbs are starting to annoy me.
“He swallows noisily.”
“He walks blearily.”
“He says acidly.”
I do like that Erica lives on Division street. That’s kinda clever.

Very exciting. Erica seems like a sociopath. Patrick has come clean about everything to to Stephanie. Playing out like a lifetime movie. I hope there’s a good twist coming. Language is easy, but makes it hard to put down.

They weren’t lying when they said it’s a page turner. Lot of characters right off the bat, but easy to follow.
