Reading (audiobooking) this for obvious politically-minded reasons, but I also frankly and strongly do want to get to The Couch Moment, which I’ve heard has been removed from later editions, alas :(

Anyways, genuinely interesting anthropological work with politics that I strongly disagree with, though I do admire the intelligence and balance with which these socioeconomic issues are addressed! Even if JD seems odd

Bro I have been lacking on reading generally, but booooow howdy have I been lacking on this damn tome that takes like 95% of my mental energy in a wage-labor life that does NOT leave me with 95% mental energy to spare without abusing stimulants and alcohol 😤

Been thinking about this a lot recently though, excited to continue 🫡✌️

Current audiobook and easily my favorite book I’ve been reading this year 😤 Absolutely thrilling non-fiction with oodles of info on how Sapiens went from just another ape in the Homo genus to, uh, Species #1 on the planet.

I’ve never read a more informative or engaging history of hunter-gatherer culture in my life and it’s a BLAST. Somehow made me mad at the Agricultural Revolution, which feels impressive

Started re-reading this because I’m fully on the bandwagon for the movies being maybe the best sci-fi ever put to film, and remembered loving this when I read it about five years ago. Also I have friends who are working through the entire series of books and I wanna keep up with them 😤

Still so great, and so impressed with the choices of what to keep in the movies and what to excise

lol remember when Seth Rogen almost started WWIII because he made a silly movie about James Franco interviewing Kim Jong-Un?

Totally forgot about that, WILD to get his take on the whole situation

Reinforces my idea that an autobiography by literally ANYONE, written sincerely enough, would just be a blast to read, regardless of ~objective quality/craft~ of the writing; as of now Seth is still just a Canadian high-school student, but I resonate with him heavy and love reading about his adventures 😤 All hail Seth Rogen

Bro is PONDERING 💀

This guy should’ve been at the club 😤

(Genuinely interesting, cool that the guy managed to bridge Rationalism and Empiricism after, like, a century-or-so-long debate, and I’ll enjoy ripping my hair out spending 30 minutes on every 5 pages of this 💯💯)

My Puerto Rican coworker (and lovely pal :)) knows I’m trying to learn Spanish and found this elementary-level Spanish book to aid the process, which is incredibly sweet 😌

Comforting how easily the (immensely basic) Spanish is to read, and it’s cool history I’m unaware of regarding This Guy and the Dominican Republic 1930-onwards, so cool!

Kinda riveting character development that both feels perfectly fitting and genuinely shocking while reading and I can’t WAIT to see where it goes

Actually did finish this, but it requires a much more thoughtful response than I can give right now—rest assured that it’s one of the most valuable non-fictions I’ve read in my life, masterfully balances thorough academic sourcing with powerful personal stories, and clarifies the Big Conflict immensely well while providing Proper Infuriation 🫡

String Theory SO sexy oh my god 😭😭

A blast to read although much of the minutiae/logistics is, alas, over my head (but also much of This Minutiae requires doctoral-level training in merely decades-old mathematics, soz I won’t be too ego-bruised by my limits there 😤) Do we really life in a 10-dimensional world oh my GOD??

A Little Life review coming soon, been gearing myself up for that <3

The most beautiful, psychologically immersive, and Deeply Distressing novel I’ve ever read (at this point), with little-to-no exaggeration.

Willem and Jude are two of my favorite characters I’ve experienced in media; I’m in the midst of “The Happy Years” right now and can hardly express how moving they both have been for me. Gonna have to mess up a LOT for this to end up not as my favorite book.

Christ alive this is one of the hardest reads imaginable—just about every Subset of Trauma is rendered so realistically and personally that it feels nearly like a first-person experience of horrific pain.

Despite the Sheer Amount of Devastating Shit, though, it never feels exploitative or pain-porn-ish, but remains deeply empathetic and human to an extent that I don’t think I’ve felt from a novel, ever. Adore

Jesus Christ I can’t stop crying

I’ve never felt more for a character than Jude St. Francis (and, although not going through experiences NEARLY as horrific as him, have resonated at my worst moments with the internal monologue of a character more), and I haven’t cried this much in a piece of media since Everything Everywhere All at Once in April 2022 😤

This will probably be my favorite novel.

Such a wide variety of Perspectives on psychedelics (academic research, personal testimonies, reflective essays on Self/The Universe, even a poem and a botanist’s research), and I’m thrilled reading it :)

One of America’s many faults has been its lack of research into the powerful, life-changing ways that psychedelics can heal an ill mind (ask about my experiences with shrooms if ya’d like 🫡)

So bad at keeping up with Goodreads but I was entirely absorbed in the first part of this story and am already certain it’s gonna be among my favorites of all time—I also almost had to put it down at a certain point (“I need to go to Andy’s”) because it was so emotionally difficult, so hooooo boy am I in for a treat 🙃

The most engrossed I’ve been with a book this year; so much I want to say, but for now what I just wanna say that Doerr is able to capture powerful, universal feelings through very specific moments SO well? That’s been difficult for me in my writing (I often start from the Grand Thing/Theme I want to write about and have difficulty translating it to the specific, human moments), but he does it marvelously 😤

FASCINATING history that’s gone completely over my head thus far (a Native American tribe was, for a time, the Wealthiest Group of People per capita in the WORLD because of oil discoveries on their reservation?!?), and presented in a real engaging way! Can’t wait for Scorsese’s adaptation 😤
