Sophia went down to the shore, and came back and sat down at the table. "And all you can do is just read," she said. She raised her voice and screamed, "You just read and read and read!"
Then she threw herself down on the table and wept.

Holmes proclaims that everyone is having fun with "drink, promiscuity, and speed." Jones thinks that "careers are passé among college women,' and that all they really want to do is get married and start having babies. Both men agree that today's generation lives in terror of the H-bomb, and Holmes blames technology. Some young man smoking a pipe suggests that we all either commit suicide or start going to parties.

"Even when hell-bent, she had energy and discipline. She sparkled was intense, came on strong to men, women, and situations. She could dominate, entertain, flirt, impress, tease, dissimulate, and win."

She could only do so much with the crew cut and Blue Magic pomade boys who proclaimed the same clan identity as Sylvia's Yale and Amherst admirers. They were more nervous, too self-conscious for the grand gestures Sylvia adored. Sylvia noticed that despite their achievements they tended toward insecurity, and she did not want and she did not want to spend her playtime "bolstering inferiority complexes."

Sylvia worked hard but loathed talk about grades. She wanted it all: "Fulbrights, prizes, Europe, publication, men." Freshman year was laden with sad, soggy blind dates-but next fall, there was Amherst, with its weekends and boyfriends and poetry readings. Dylan Thomas. W.H. Auden.

Fleabag if she was selfish and insufferable. I can’t put this book down, though. I’m so drawn to it for some reason.
