Now I want a rabbit hole reading dive into the Holy Spirit! Reading this chapter felt like a nudge/affirmation that even though the work or ministry may be “behind the scenes” it doesn’t make it any less important. Doing behind the scenes work is more important than you think.

Can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I read this, but man, I forgot how good this was! SO glad that a beginnings of the Foster Care system was around then. Huck ABSOLUTELY needs to be taken away from his father. Of course, the Christianity is cultural, and nobody really explains anything. Huck reminds me of Davy in Anne.

Yep, called it. Almondine is Ophelia. 😢

Now I’m concerned, because I know that Hamlet ends in everyone else’s death, except for the Prince of Denmark (the stray Forte in this case)—it IS a tragedy…but idk if I WANT it to end that way…but I REALLY want Edgar to off Claude, too… ah, the suspense!!

Aw! Tinder and Baboo found a new home!! Happy and sad. Edgar will miss them badly, but Henry is trustworthy, so they will be well taken care of.

Called it on the Hamlet retelling!
Edgar - Hamlet
Claude - Claudius
Almondine - Ophelia? Horatio?
Trudy and Gar - Hamlet’s parents Gertrude & the Ghost/Hamlet Sr.
Forte - Fortinbras?

Almondine:
“Anyway, there was so little they might have done, save to bring out a shirt of his to lie on, perhaps walk with her along the fence line, where fragments of time had snagged and hung. But if they noticed her grief, they hardly knew to do those things. And she without the language to ask.”

Finally, back together again. Damn Regency era for constricting people by making manners so all important people don’t even talk to each other about important things! They’re MARRIED! Let them do as they please and screw society!

Wasn’t expecting the ending to be the most interesting part.

College was SO different back then! Sounds more like high school. Phillipa Gordon annoys me, but I have a vague recollection that she gets better.

I’m only reading this because of Book Club and I saw the beginning of the film and wanted to know how the rest of the story went. Would never have picked this up of my own accord.

My brain, reading Chapter r: “When you can learn to balance a tac hammer on your head, you will head off your foes with a balanced attack!”

Pros:
Action packed from the beginning
Cons:
Corrupt clergy. NOT ALL CLERGY WERE THAT WAY! I’M SO SICK OF SEEING THIS DEPICTION! I hope Nick kills “father” Martin. That man deserves to die.
Rape and disrespectful of women. And the author wrote this for his granddaughter?! Ken Follett’s better than you in this regard.
Swearing. STOP USING JESUS’ NAME LIKE THAT! NOBODY SWORE LIKE THAT BACK THEN!
