Debra is on page 20 of 198 of The Penelopiad
This is bound to prove to be the best thing I've read in quite a while. Atwood magically writes Penelope's tale (wife of Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey) in the first person. I was instantly captivated by the first line: "Now that I'm dead I know everything." Six parts in and I love it! Why haven't I heard of this book before?

This is not at all what I expected. I'm listening to Alan Cumming read his own memoir, one I thought was going to be on his father's inability to cope with Alan's "outing". In fact it is nothing of the sort, but is thus far captivating nonetheless.

Imagine firewalking on a bet, passing out, then waking up in alternate universe. Heinlein has me interested within the first few pages.

A quote from Chapter 2: "Did something happen to me like that which Mr. Wells described in "Men Like Gods?" Did Mr. Wells have the holy gift of prophecy? For example, would men someday actually fly to the moon? Preposterous!"

Image part of the penalty for crime is to undergo "chroming", wherein skin color is biochemically altered as an indicator of one's crime. This book grabbed me from the first line.

Debra is reading Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things
I admit I picked this up based on solely on the cover and title. I had no idea that Furiously Happy was an Internet phenomenon. Hope the contents are as good as the cover. So far it's not.

It's keeping its magic.

Instantly magical with the haunting promise of twists and turns, perhaps even terror. I've been intrigued by this book for months, almost as if the book itself was calling to me, pulling me to pick it, open it up, which I did yesterday, and 'am already captivated.

I'll keep you informed.
