Comparison.... Middlemarch was 38 hours long and took me several months to finish. The Count of Monte Cristo is 44 hours long and I'm already half way through in 4 days.

Betsie Bush is 50% done with A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

I thought I had read this book as a young adult, but I was wrong. I had the mistaken impression that it was insipid or saccharine, but several people mentioned it to me recently so I thought I would "re-read" it... instead I discovered a lovely surprise that, first, I had not read this book before, and second, it is really an excellent story that kept me awake late into the night wanting to hear more!

This story is intense, and I care about the characters, but it is difficult to listen to the descriptions of physical abuse (against animals and children).

I am only 2 hours into this 32 hour book and I am annoyed by the great level of detail provided by the author. the narrator's regular voice is okay but his character voices are overdone to the point of being irritated. I doubt that I will make it to the end.
