Truly amazing the leadership and grit of most of the crew. And amazing how little thought Shackleton seemed to give as to who would join. Either tremendous intuition or tremendous fortitude (or likely both).

Yeah, this book’s take on menopausal depression and schizophrenia has not aged particularly well. I suppose that is the risk of publishing any work of “science”. That, in the future, subsequent research is likely to falsify most of what someone has concluded. So, is it better to try and fail than not to try?

This is not a good one to consume as an audiobook (if at all?). My few thoughts so far are: 1) general unifying theories of life are usually wrong, but useful, 2) early psychology included some weird-ass stuff, 3) probably the over quantification and sanitization of research today comes with the consequences of missing out on some fundamental, meaningful understandings about the way things (and people) are

Not sure what I expected. It’s philosophical and interesting and thought-provoking and seems like each assertion is more wrong than the previous one. But it is probably good for me to read/listen to things I think are wrong to challenge my thinking. One big takeaway is that we fundamentally misunderstand our motivations and irrationally fear death.

So far, this audiobook is not very original or interesting. But if I stop listening because I can prioritize more interesting or insightful books, am I just proving the author’s point?
