Peter Benchley is a racist and a misogynist, turns out. What awful characters from an awful mind.

Apparently Daniel Handler still thought “gay” and “r*****ed” were excellent pejoratives when this book was published — in 2011. An hour into this book and I’ve already lost most of my respect for this author. A tremendous disappointment.

Audiobook note: Lauren Zizzo reads this book and she is unbearably hysterical. Absolutely melodramatic, ridiculous, terrible performance on top of the terrible writing.

This narrator has a very strange mix of egotism and a LOT of internalized misogyny to work through — and there is nothing remotely enjoyable or interesting in her incessant navel gazing. This far, this feels more like the author working through HER issues through a proxy, than a ghost or horror story. I really detest this narrator and the author’s voice. If it weren’t so short, I’d be abandoning in now.
