Dear god this is awful

So far we have elements of Dune, Ender’s Game, Divergent, Peter Pan, and the Magicians Nephew.

I love this book. I hate this narrator.

Confusing. Too flowered.
A clearer voice would benefit this story.

“Men are afraid women will laugh at them. Women are afraid me will kill them.”

Love the words so far, not so much the narrator’s voice.

The vinegar, the vehemence.
I am reading a product of its time and temperament, I cannot will upon it anachronism. Nor can I know the experiences Charlotte had with the individual that made her so against the whole. Still, Villette is a bitter novel so far. Not to say anything of the seemingly constant theme of depriving this woman of joy, love, & the gumption enough to create either for herself.

The misfortune of audiobooks is that when presented with a word familiar to the 17th century, but foreign to me, I cannot look it up as my phonetic attempts yield a much confused result.

Where’s the magical in all this realism?

I’m bored

This is so marvelously odd.

I wonder how much the reader’s voice is affecting the vibe? There are aspects that I genuinely love so far, but also things that are frustratingly off-putting.

The mystery is fantastic, the sociopolitical commentary is not. Ugh. I want murder and cleverness and clues and silly suspects - that’s all.
