In the final pages of the book Wiesenthal journeys to find Karl's mother. As Wiesenthal discovers the mother of Karl, he realises that Karl was being truthful in asking for forgiveness. This is true because after Wiesenthal sits down with the mother he begins to unravel the whole story involving Karl's family and the Nazi's. Karl realised the err of his ways during the war, and came around to his family's beliefs.

Wiesenthal meets Bolek, a Polish jew who was transferred to Wiesenthal's camp because of the Russians further push towards Germany. Wiesenthal observes Bolek as he practices his religion to become a priest. He is intrigued by this level of devotion to his faith especially since he watches Bolek being humiliated and harassed by the Nazi guards often. He wonders if Bolek will lose or question his faith because of this.

The main character, Wiesenthal, becomes increasingly upset at the death rate that surrounds him. He begins to recall his encounter with the SS soldier and rethinks the stories that were told to him. He feels hopeless after moving camps and losing both of his friends. Going on with life seems impossible given the circumstances, yet he continues on and perseveres.

When the wounded SS soldier retells his gory stories to Wiesenthal one of the things that caught my ear was when the SS member's comrade spat on a heavily injured Russian. He then said a common phrase used in there platoon, "No pity for Ivan." This shocked me because I was unaware of how crude another human could be. I was also impressed that the SS soldier protested against this act.

I am interested to find out what other things happen between the injured SS member and Weisenthal. This interaction could come in place later in the book. It is still a mystery as to why the nurse brought Weisenthal into that particular med-bay. As the reader it was interesting to find out the confession of the fatally injured man and to read about the reaction that occured from the author.

It is interesting how Josek, Wiesenthal's friend believes he is superior towards the other jews in the camp in a place where he is believed to be inferior. One of the areas that caught my attention was when the author spoke about how the jewish people of Lemberg began to question their faith in god. It is evident that the non jewish people in Lemberg looked at the jews as outcasts and it is very sad read.

Blumes is finished with The Mothers
Throughout this novel the author conveyed lots of emotions through interesting characters. The author lead us through each character's life, revealing there experiences and how they made meaning of them. The narrative of the story is secondary to the emotional journey that the author brings us through. We experience grief, heartbreak, hope and resilience. Because of the way the writing illustrates hardship.

Luke and Nadia are having an affair and she is racked with guilt. She tells herself that she does not have to be guilty. Luke also feels the same way. Because both of them know what they are doing wrong, it shows that they have good hearts but are not yet mature enough to have good intentions. With Aubrey unknowing of the affair and trying to have a baby with Luke it complicates things and adds an unexpected twist.

The author has started to use more refined language in the last few chapters. I think this is because the storyline is getting a little bit darker and more adult-like. Nadia keeps having encounters with Luke where she is unsure whether to express hate or to become friends. She is conflicted because her best friend is married to her ex boyfriend and her dad was just hospitalized. she once again feels alone.

A little before chapter eight the story panned to Luke's point of view. His mens' league football team beat him up in an alley after his team mate's wife kissed him. This caused Luke to go to the hospital, then from there he went to rehab for his leg. After developing a relationship with Aubrey Evans a girl from his neighborhood and proposing to her I am curious to see what happens when Nadia is brought back.

In chapter six the narrator explains the hardships of women who ended up in Upper Room. Having endured racism, sexism, and a life of oppression, they decided to move to Upper Room to be more appreciated and have a better life for themselves and their families. The women are caretakers both at home and professionally, which ties into the title, "The Mothers," and truly shows the price of motherhood.

through reading this book the author illustrates a theme of a tight knit community. She also conveys a theme of loneliness and isolation, as evidenced by Nadia's mother's death and her abortion. Both Nadia and Luke separately think about the child they created together and the loss they feel even though they are both too young to become parents. Even though Upper Room is small, they still feel loneliness and grief.

In chapter four the author illustrates the devastation of a community and the family when an untimely and cruel death happens such as the death of 14 year old Kayla Dean. The way the author uses metaphors to describe the difference between "hard deaths" and "soft deaths" is beautiful to read and crushing to feel. The way she describes the grief around the "hard deaths" being hard to swallow is accurate and resonates.

In the third chapter Nadia as the narrator explains how when the pastor visits her home she is anxious about what he thinks of the house. Nadia talks about how her house must feel empty to him, to anyone. She feels that her house is empty because her mother is no longer alive. Nadia reflects upon her relationship with her father, remembering how she was scared of him when she was little, now she wants his love.

The start of the novel introduces us to several characters but one specifically is a stand out. Nadia Turner is our main protagonist. The author immediately gives us insight into her emotional pain. Her mother took her own life and her father is not fully present. Most of her anxiety is towards abandonment. When her boyfriend does not return her calls she assumes the worst. She is vulnerable because of her pregnancy.

Towards the end of the book we learn lots of things about every character. The very end of the book is extremely interesting in the way the author tells us the story. When the american reached to pull something out I got suspicious. Whatever the american pulled out could have been so many things bad or good. The author left us the readers to interpret it ourselves. I personally think it was a gift or card.

Changez keeps coming back to the idea of being successful in america. His mind is set on having everything that a "typical american" would want rather than what he wants. He is in love with Erica and he appreciates his Ivy league education but his job and coworkers are what is holding him back. If Changez would accept that Jim is not a mentor then he would have a better job and more happier life. He deserves respect!

Changez starts to talk about military in chapter nine. It is interesting to me how in depth he goes. meaning he talks about it as if Pakistan's military is the best trained military force in the world. he explains how there is constantly talk about military training or clearing off the roadways for fighter jets to practice landing just in case airfields are bombed out. I wonder if there is going to be more military.

It is interesting how Changez is so in love with Erica. The reason I say this is because Changez gets extremely hung up on her. When he thinks of her he does not stop and if he cleared his mind he would be much more successful and he already has the pressure of faking his identity. It seems that when Changez is talking to the american in the novels present day that he is in a better mind set and more free.

Reading about 9/11 taking place in the novel made me feel like I was in it. It felt so real, as if I were on the streets of New York watching planes crashing on purpose into buildings. After the attack, I witnessed Erica and Changez get closer. This makes me think about how they will keep their relationship lively. This includes chris's role. I wonder If Erica leaves Changez? I am intrigued to find out what is next.

After learning about the 9/11 attacks we begin to notice discrimination towards Changez. Reading about Changez being detained by security at the airport shocked me. The security was interrogating him and he could do nothing. This blatant act of racism was upsetting to read about and yet it must be have been humiliating for the character. I could feel how disempowered he was. This gave me insight into his U.S. life.

I have not paid much attention to the stranger that Changez guides throughout the novel, but when I read the stranger kept putting his hands in his pockets it made me question his identity more. Ever since Changez introduced himself the american has been cold towards him. I believe he is a soldier based on Changez's description at the beginning of the book. I believe that the stranger is slightly suspicious.

Learning about how Changez was madly in love with a women named Erica shocked me, due to the fact that I thought Changez was not a very emotional person. Changez as the narrator explains his love in a myriad of creative ways. The vocabulary that our protagonist uses is very complex and has opened my mind to new word play. I have really enjoyed chapter two and am excited to learn more about Changez and Erica.

The setting the author set at the beginning of this novel was both appealing and confusing. When the author created a scene where Changez was trying to help what seemed like a lost american I liked the way he allowed the readers to interpret their own answers to Changez and the americans conversation. I was confused on where the setting of this interaction was at first but soon understood the complex format.

in the first few pages of chapter three the author makes it evident that both brothers Wesley and Frank are very different. But are they? When Davy talks about his dad Wesley in the midst of investigation, it seems like Wesley changes his personality in a manipulative way. Completely changing his way, people seem to like him more allowing him to get close and learn things. His intentions are good Frank's are not.

Reading about Marie's death did not particularly shock me. Putting two and two together allowed for me to realize that Marie could have been murdered and I think it was Frank. I think that since Wesley was so busy with trying to minimize Frank's penalty, he got distracted. I am excited to learn more about Marie's death and am interested in who was envolved if any were.

Having understood Grandpa Hayden more and more I have learned that he is addicted to power and does not care very much about others. The author presents Frank as Grandpa's favorite even though he has two sons. It is seen that he is extremely sexist and rude, so it does not surprise me that Frank turned out the way he did. He is looked upon as a powerful man when in reality he is pathetic.
