i love this so much

Just finished Part 1 and I’m both shaken and curious for what’s next in Part 2. The writing is spare but devastating, every silence and repetition carrying so much weight. Hard to read knowing it’s based on the rape and murder of a Palestinian girl in 1949, and harder still because the same brutality continues in Palestine today. Published in 2017, yet it feels terrifyingly present.

This one's a perfect roadtrip companion. Love the prose!

Can’t help but fall in love with Fitzgerald’s prose, yet I keep wondering how a straight white man of his time could write with such tenderness. Nicole feels too vivid and layered to be just his invention, almost as if Zelda’s voice lingers between the lines. The novel moves like a dream, but there’s always that suspicion of whose truth it really carries.

The glitter of the Riviera has started to crack, besties...

Gordon’s self-sabotage is exasperating, yet there’s something strangely poetic in the way he clings to despair as if it were integrity. This novel captures the grind of poverty so vividly — the humiliation, the stubborn pride, the hollow comforts of art — that even his bitterness feels luminous, as though Orwell carved beauty out of ruin.

Pretty good!
