I don't like how they're trying to desensitize me to the aliens and how we didn't get to see much of Lilith's journey and inner thoughts on the developing relationships the aliens are cultivating with these people. Also hate the way they paired people up so quickly. Horror is horroring

"as if I could wander away, wander forever, see strange and beautiful things, one after the other to the world's end. The freshness and wetness all about me (I had seen nothing but drought and withered things for many months before my sickness) made me feel that I had misjudged the world; it seemed kind, and laughing, as if its heart also danced.... Who can feel ugly when the heart meets delight?"

interesting of the framing of a female sacrifice to a male deity as being "the female devouring the male." The cursed sacrifice therefore must be both the best and the worst to be deserving of sacrifice and deserving of devouring

My libby hold is expiring so I'm probably not finishing this. It's just starting to get somewhere and I'm starting to enjoy some of these characters (weirdly I can't yet tell if they're side characters or are going to stick around) but I have yet to be shown why I should be invested in this plot which is a bummer

Really mixed feelings on this one so far. Some really interesting pieces but I struggle with some of the autobiographical elements that feel out of place. I think she could have benefited from a better editor. Some of the info that's been cool included learning that black ash and sweetgrass both being plants that grow better under care and how we need to think more about how we are able to actively support nature

The parental stuff in this book is next level. Thinking about how this mom realizes her daughter is working with her enemy and her only thought is that they will do a better job at giving her the love she needs. And the line about how if her daughter died the story's ending would be too obvious: she would simply destroy the world

Really enjoying this so far. Some of the other short "cozy fantasy" I've read has had the downside of being bland, but this one I'm intrigued by the characters and there's that vague looming sense of danger that I think is needed to drive a story forward. Love the way Tao is accidentally collecting (potential) friends against her own will
