Folks: I had sworn up and down I would never again read anything with “brief history” in the title but here we are and so far … very good! I know so little about Indonesia. In Canada at least I think it must be the most underrepresented country of origin demographically and almost never makes the news. Yet it is a truly massive country. What goes on there? I intend to find out. Thank you.

Remember that song “What if God was one of us? Just a stranger on the bus?” It was so bad that I completely wrote off the premise and never considered the question again until I started reading this book.

Unlike the song, this book is a masterpiece (so far).

What if the embodiment of that which we regard as ultimately and transcendently Good walked among us? We would treat him like shit! Sad but instructive!!

This is very very good so far and I highly recommend it. Kind of like Ishiguro meets Cloud Atlas directed by Wes Anderson. Dropping this note because it’s a debut novel and a Canadian author so I’m sure early support means a lot.
