It's striking how romantically republican Jefferson was. Lots of super impractical nods to creating a sort of "society of equals" -- like making the White House open to all and refusing to seat people at official gatherings in any order of hierarchy, even at the expense of massively offending stodgy and rank-conscious European diplomats with very real consequences for the nation.
