The Fox Sisters are like the precursors to televangelists

I don’t want this book to end. It’s a slow burn, but the characters are well-developed and relatable. Yes the language can be challenging if you don’t enjoy looking up and antiquated word now and again, but I enjoy learning new words. I have read several books about the Spiritualism movement, but never one about the Fox Sisters specifically. It’s a great story for historical fiction. Highly recommend.

Reading this book is like eating a really tough but delicious steak: you want to finish it, but it’s hard work.

He uses this literary technique of describing a person prior to naming them. It reads smoothly, but I’m forever going back and forth applying descriptions to names. 😆

It reminds me why I left the church and why I can respect those who still choose to stay there.

It's as if they have thinner boundaries separating them from other people's emotions and from the tragedies and cruelties if the world. They tend to have unusually strong consciences. They avoid violent movies and TV shows; they're acutely aware of the consequences of a lapse in their own behaviour. In social settings they often focus on subjects like personal problems, which others consider "too heavy".
