Low mists like this reveal a hidden London. They settle along the lines of vanished watercourses and lost rivers and fall into dips and hollows that have been covered by houses and roads for centuries. The mist finds a vanished geography and outlines it.

The moon and the river are intrinsically linked, and I know that whatever else happens in my life, the moon will keep rising and the tides will keep turning; they are my constant, my grounding and my comfort.

I'm a time traveller and a tide traveller, addicted to chasing lost and discarded stories of forgotten Londoners from the mud...

This quote really resonates in current times.

I'm not a cricket fan and only knew of Michael Holding thanks to the classic commentator's line, "The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey" from a 1970s West Indies v England match. Even his viral 2020 moment on Sky TV during a rain delay, weeks after the murder of George Floyd, had passed me by and I happened upon this book in the library by chance.
