“My feelings were very, very painful. Every line, every word was—in the hackneyed metaphor which their dear writer would forbid—a dagger to my heart. To know Marianne was in the same town was—in the same language—a thunderbolt. Thunderbolts and daggers!”

“And when she joined them at dinner two hours after she had suffered the extinction of all her dearest hopes, no one would have supposed that Elinor was mourning in secret over obstacles which divide her forever from the object of her love, and that Marianne was dwelling on the perfections of a man, of whose heart she felt thoroughly possessed and whom she expected to see in every carriage that drove near the house

What you will witness will haunt you until your final moments. You will regret wanting to know. And yet, when I ask you if you truly want to be shown, you will say ‘show me’. No human has ever been able to leave a box unopened.”
